ZAKYNTHOS ISLAND
Zakynthos is one the most beautiful and green islands of Greece.
Zakynthos or Zante, is one of the most beautiful Greek Island; rich in history due to it being ruled by foreigners, it has seen Romans, Byzanthians, Venetians, Turkish, French and English before the Greek flag was finally raised on 21st of May 1864. With 48,000 inhabitants and an area of 410 square km ‘s, the island is full of stunning little villages each different from the other: long white beaches, coves of stones and pebbles, incredible cliffs with isolated white beaches and inland luxurious hills which dominate the fertile plains covered in grapes and vines, villages and towns scattered among the hills and literally suspended in time!
The North & East is wild with very few inhabitants and not at all touristy, and the sea is beautiful with many little coves and pebble beaches. The Shipwreck Beach and the Pinnacolo Beach are absolute gems and reachable only by boat. Porto Vromi and Porto Limionas are also amazing!
The South has an intense nightlife in the towns of Laganas, Argassi and Kalamaki where the bars are open until dawn and the rhythm of the night is pronounced by the many discos. On this part of the island the long sandy beaches are well-organised and very crowded, except for those beaches which are reached by difficult paths and are far from the towns, such as Banana beach, Daphni and Gerakas which are part of the marine reserve where the Caretta-Caretta turtles arrive from Brazil and Cape Verde to deposit their eggs.
The East is the area of Zante Town, Akrotiri, Tsilivi and Alikes, where you find shops and supermarkets, excellent taverns and restaurants, bars, beach bars, ice cream parlours and discos, but the nightlife here is much quieter and is limited to the town centres. The sandy beaches are numerous, generally not very big (except for Tsilivi Beach), less crowded and discretely organised. Bouka Beach, Ambula Beach and Paradise Beach mustn’t be missed!
The marine turtle, Caretta Caretta, (1 meter x 100kg) which, protected by the Marine Park, arrive on Zakynthos in huge numbers to deposit their eggs from June to September.
With a bit of luck you can also see the rare Monaca seal, which finds its favourite habitat in the caves on the Western side of the island!
How can you forget the fantastic sunsets of Kambi, the little mountain villages of Macherado, Kilomeno, Exo Hora with the valley of the wells, Anafonitria with its ancient monastery, Volimes with its crafted products (carpets, china and crockery, lace, honey and oil) and then also San Giorgio Monastery, the medieval forest and the oldest grapevines in the world, a 2000-year old “grandfather” still in perfect health.
So…….there are many things to do and to see, but the hospitality and kindness of the local people will remain in your heart, as will their relaxed way of life, their tavern-style cooking, the beach bars and for those who enjoy nightlife, in the areas of Laganas, Kalamaki and Argassi there are hundreds of bars which will see you through to the sunrise!
