KEFALONIA ISLAND
The Turquoise Island
All the beauty of Greece is concentrated on the island of Cephalonia, the largest of the Ionian islands, with 42,000 inhabitants and an area of approximately 800 square kms and the fifth largest of all the Greek islands.
You will find an enormous variety in the landscape: green and luxurious vegetation alternated with harsh bare environments, and deserted beaches with beautiful crystal-clear water such as Myrtos bay!
Discover the underground Lake Melissani, the 150 million-year-old stalagmite cave at Drogarati, mountains that reach 1700 metres, Mount Enos with its forest of Black Fir-trees, a species which is unique in the world and protected here thanks to the Institution of National Parks which also protect the rich local flora and fauna: 1014 different types of plants, wild Enu horses, hawks, golden eagles, royal eagles, wild mountain goats, and marine fauna such as dolphins, Monach seals and the Caretta-Caretta turtles. Amazing and unforgettable are the many villages such as Fiskardo with its original 18th century houses, Assos with its bay and Venetian castle, Luxouri called “Little Paris”, Skala with its endless beaches and precious mosaics at Villa Romana, Poros mountain gorges which reach down into the sea, Sami with its port, castle and beach called Antisami, Aghia Eufemia visited by yachts from all over the world, Arghigna and Markopoulo with the strange phenomenon of its innocuous snakes which spit every year during the August Bank Holiday week! There is also the monastery of S. Gerasimos in the Omala plain and lastly Argostoli the island’s elegant capital, with its museums, British bridges, theatre, lagoon, port, large fruit and vegetable market, and don’t forget a visit to the monument dedicated to the 10,000 Italian soldiers massacred during the Second World War.
In short, if all this is not enough for you and you find its call irresistible, you can always visit the mythical, legendary and beautiful Itaca, father of Ulysses, reachable in just 15 minutes (a day excursion) by ferryboat!
We are certain you will love Cephalonia for its beautiful beaches, for its sea of such spectacular colours that you will really believe you are in the Caribbean, for the many excursions, for its taverns, for its excellent wine (try the Robola), for the hospitality of its inhabitants and for many other reasons which you will discover………alone!!!
